Walking as Exercise During Pregnancy

Walking is one of the best ways to stay active during pregnancy. It is low impact, so it doesn’t endanger your knees and ankles, plus it’s good for the heart and lungs. It also can be a way to meet up with friends and share the experience. Anyone who has been inactive prior to pregnancy should check with a medical professional before introducing a walking program. In the beginning, it is recommended that you start with 15 minutes, 3 times a week. This can be increased over time to 30 minutes, 4 or more times a week. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes that have adequate support and cushioning. As you walk, place your heel on the ground and roll onto your toes, rather than placing a flat foot on the ground. During the second trimester, as the baby grows, pay special attention to your posture when walking. Keep your back straight and your eyes forward and swing your arms to help with balance. Your hips and ankles may become more stressed, especially as your center of gravity changes. By the third trimester, avoid steep hills or uneven pathways that may affect your balance, and be sure to walk with a buddy. What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

Effective Toe Stretches

A successful way to increase overall flexibility and mobility in the feet is by performing toe stretches. An effective method is accomplished by sitting with the feet on the floor and lifting and lowering the toes several times. Some patients find it helpful to wrap a towel around the big toe while pulling it toward you. Now stand next to a wall with your feet shoulder-width apart. A toe flex is performed by flexing the toes of one of your feet as you press them against the wall, using your hands for balance. Hold this position for five seconds and repeat ten times on each foot. Many people like the feeling of pointing and flexing their toes, in addition to doming which strengthens your toes.  This is done to lift the arches in the foot and is practiced by trying to grip the floor with the toes. Stretching the Feet

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Gout is a painful arthritic condition caused by an excessive amount of uric acid in the body that hardens into crystals that lodge in the joints. What Is Gout?

Heel Pain Can Be Treated!

Do you suffer from heel pain when you get up in the morning? If so, you should seek the professional help of your podiatrist and have a proper diagnosis performed. Heel pain can be caused by several different foot-related conditions.

A condition that affects the heel in growing children and young adults is commonly referred to as Sever’s disease. It can cause extreme pain and discomfort, and generally affects children that participate in sporting activities. It happens when the growth plate in the heel undergoes stress, and this can cause inflammation in the heel. A growth spurt can cause the bones to grow faster than the tendons, resulting in tension in the heel. The symptoms that patients can experience often include severe heel pain, limping, or walking on tiptoes, and the pain may be worse upon arising. Relief may be found when the affected foot is elevated or by wearing shoes that have adequate cushioning. Additionally, performing stretches that help to loosen the Achilles tendon can be beneficial in providing relief. Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.
