Many people suffer from poor circulation as the aging process occurs. It may also happen from specific health conditions including diabetes, obesity, and hardened arteries. Additionally, having a sedentary lifestyle and smoking can contribute to developing poor circulation. Common symptoms can consist of pain, numbness, or a tingling sensation in the feet. Some patients have cold feet, and may notice they have become discolored. This condition can show moderate improvement by incorporating exercise and stretches into the daily routine. Walking is an effective form of exercise, and it is beneficial to drink plenty of water. It is advised to include foods such as fatty fish, leafy greens, and cinnamon into daily eating habits, which is thought to be linked to possibly improving poor circulation. If you are experiencing the above symptoms, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can help you to manage and treat poor circulation.

While poor circulation itself isn’t a condition; it is a symptom of another underlying health condition you may have. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact one of our podiatrists of Foot Surgery Specialists of Texas. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) can potentially lead to poor circulation in the lower extremities. PAD is a condition that causes the blood vessels and arteries to narrow. In a linked condition called atherosclerosis, the arteries stiffen up due to a buildup of plaque in the arteries and blood vessels. These two conditions can cause a decrease in the amount of blood that flows to your extremities, therefore resulting in pain.

Symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms of poor circulation are:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Throbbing or stinging pain in limbs
  • Pain
  • Muscle Cramps

Treatment for poor circulation often depends on the underlying condition that causes it. Methods for treatment may include insulin for diabetes, special exercise programs, surgery for varicose veins, or compression socks for swollen legs.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.

Effective Tips on How to Care For Your Feet

The average person takes hundreds of steps every day, which adds up to thousands per week. This can be one reason why people have achy feet at the end of the day, and practicing everyday foot care techniques may help to alleviate the discomfort. This can begin by washing and drying the feet thoroughly, followed by applying a good moisturizer on them. Many people like to sprinkle powder on their feet, which can help to keep the feet fresh by absorbing excess moisture. It is important to keep the toenails trimmed, and this is properly done by cutting them straight across instead of in a curved fashion. This is an effective way of preventing ingrown toenails from developing. Wearing shoes that fit correctly is another way of taking care of our feet. It is beneficial to choose shoes that have adequate room for the toes to move freely in, which may be helpful in preventing hammertoe and bunions from forming. If you would like additional information and tips on daily foot care habits, please confer with a podiatrist.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Foot Surgery Specialists of Texas. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

How to Avoid Common Causes of Foot Pain

Because the feet are an integral part of carrying out the daily activities of life, it is not a surprise that they often feel painful. Among the most common causes of foot pain are bunions, ingrown toenails, plantar fasciitis, and wearing shoes that don’t fit properly. Bunions are a bony bump on the side of the big toe, causing its base to push outward while forcing the other toes to shift together. Because a bunion widens the foot, the bump rubs against the inside of the shoe and causes pressure and pain. Roomy, flat-heeled shoes may help to lessen the effects of a bunion. Likewise, ingrown toenails can be a result of cutting the nail too short, which can cause soft skin to form around it. When this ingrown toenail presses against a shoe, slipper, or tight sock, the toe becomes inflamed and painful. Allowing toenails to grow past the nail bed and trimming them straight across may help prevent this condition. Another cause can be plantar fasciitis, an overuse injury to the tissue that runs along the sole of the foot, which is the most common cause of heel pain. Wearing shoes with ample cushioning and avoiding repetitive pounding of the heels on a hard surface can help to prevent this inflammatory and painful condition. When care is taken to buy footwear that allows your feet to breathe, has adequate support and padding, and has enough room for the toes to move, it is possible to avoid foot pain. For more information, please consult a podiatrist.

The Risks of Falling

The more one knows about the risks of falling, the better prepared one can be. Sorting through information and understanding myths related to falling is important. Falling can have serious consequences, particularly for seniors, and it may not just be a matter of getting up and continuing one’s day. Even if injuries are not life-threatening, they can be life changing. For example, a fractured foot or ankle can impact a senior’s ability to live independently. It has also been proven that the likelihood of falling again increases with falls. However, falling is not inevitable as one ages. Precautions, such as getting regular vision checks, reviewing side effects of medication, and staying active, can be taken to prevent falls. If you have fallen and sustained injuries to your feet or ankles, or would like more fall prevention information, a podiatrist can help you.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Foot Surgery Specialists of Texas. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Sever’s Disease and Baseball

Sever’s disease is an affliction of the foot that primarily targets adolescent children. Essentially, the condition occurs when the growth plate, located around the heel, becomes inflamed. This can usually occur in children between the ages of 9 and 12, and will sometimes make physical activity more painful and uncomfortable. Sever’s disease has an interesting relationship with youth baseball. For children that engage in baseball, they might be setting themselves up for Sever’s disease if they are overtraining for baseball, as many children are prone to do. Additionally, if the child is engaging in baseball with decreased strength and flexibility, this might also be a contributing factor. If your child plays youth baseball, contact a podiatrist today for more information about Sever’s disease and what you can be doing to help prevent it.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see one of our podiatrists from Foot Surgery Specialists of Texas. Our doctors can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.
